We would like to invite everyone to attend our Black Grove female sale on Saturday, October 26th at the farm in Newberry, SC. This will be our 51st year in the registered Angus business, and our first sale since being designated a historic herd by the Angus Association last year.

At Black Grove, we breed using proven, maternal, low input genetics. We have researched the dams in the pedigree of every animal in our herd, every AI sire we use, and every cow we consider buying to ensure that they were productive and lived a long time. Our belief is that a long lived cow is a functional cow, because if she didn’t have a calf every year, have good feet, have good teeth, have a good udder, or milk well, she would be culled. The result of this research is the Black Grove Longevity Index. We believe our use of proven genetics focusing on the great old matrons, cow families, and sires produce the cattle that breeders need, separating us from the crowd.

We do not focus on IMF or $B, but instead we focus on functionality which translates into longevity and profit. We focus more on $EN and $W. We strive to be known as the place to buy your replacement heifers and bulls that produce replacement heifers that make the cow calf operator money.

We are offering approximately 50% of our breeding age herd in our production sale this fall, guaranteeing you the opportunity to buy plenty of cattle that we wish we were keeping.

Two cow families that we are featuring this week are the Erica and Donna families.

Lots 1 & 2 are both direct daughters of Castle Hill Erica C035, the record high selling beef cow in South Carolina, valued at $120,000, and acknowledged as the greatest full sister to Leachman Right Time. Each of these animals have positive $EN and $W that combine to +44.92 for Lot 1 and +51.71 for Lot 2. A full sister to lot 1 & 2 was a donor at Coleman Angus and sold for $16,000. We are offering three Erica heifers in addition to the two donors.

Lots 6 & 7 are Black Grove Donna cows. Lot 6 is a Leachman Right Time daughter out of Brooks Donna 321, a second generation pathfinder dam with over $100,000 in progeny sales, is the result of mating Pathfinder sire DHD Traveler 6807 with Pathfinder dam AAR Donna 1853, the full sister of Pathfinder sire AAR New Trend. Lot 7 is a daughter of a full sister to Lot 6.

When you head our way, there are many things to do in the area that can make your trip to the Black Grove sale a weekend to remember.

If you are coming from anywhere north or west of Newberry, chances are you will drive right by one of the biggest tourist attraction in the Carolinas, the Biltmore Estate. Located in Asheville, NC just off of I-40 and I-26, the Biltmore house, built by the Vanderbilt family, is the largest privately owned house in the United States and sits on an estate of over 8,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The estate has its own winery and a registered Angus cattle operation, run by our friend Dr. Ted Katsigianis, and offers tours of the house and estate year round. If you have never been there, it is certainly worth a trip.

Be sure to look for our email next week, when we feature our longevity index, more cow families, and another spot to visit in the Carolinas. As always, if you would like to know more, please visit our website at www.blackgrove.com.
